This intensive three-hour course, designed for students struggling with reading on the phonetic or comprehension level, meets daily for four weeks. Students entering grades 2 through 5 enjoy small group instruction in Phono-graphix, Read Naturally (a reading fluency program), comprehension strategies and word study/vocabulary. Every child also takes part in an individual Phono-graphix session each morning. Manipulatives, memory strategies and language-based instruction reinforce concepts.
Reading instructors and McLean faculty, experienced in teaching students with reading difficulties, administer pre- and post-tests to document improvement. (Students are screened before acceptance into the program; contact the SummerEdge Office for details.) At the end of the program, instructors also write a report on each student’s progress, strengths and areas needing continued support.
