This intensive two and a half-hour course, designed for students struggling with writing, meets daily for three weeks. Students entering grades 3 though 6 enjoy small group instruction in Step Up to Writing, Grammar, Spell-Links (an encoding program) and Write Track. Every child also takes part in an individual brainstorming, editing or conferencing session each afternoon. Manipulatives, memory strategies and language-based instruction reinforce concepts.
Writing instructors and McLean faculty, experienced in teaching students with writing difficulties, document improvement. Screening prior to the program’s start will identify possible gaps in a student’s understanding and targets areas for review and reinforcement. At the end of the program, instructors also write a report on each student’s progress, strengths and areas needing continued support.
