Summer Edge Camper- Need to know / Need to Have –
-
Your camper will be joining Calleva for some of the activities while at SummerEdge camp. Below is a listing of the activities that Calleva will be offering. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Calleva office.
CAVING
Caving involves many challenges for the group and individual. Many of the challenges involve tough physical obstacles that cavers must maneuver under, over, and through with the help of the group and on their own. Many of these obstacles can be mentally challenging, requiring cavers to cram together in cold, dark, sometimes wet, and possibly confining situations. Cave environments are constant but tough, demanding the participants to take care of a) themselves, b) their equipment, c) the cave, in order to safely cave and minimize impact on the fragile cave environment. Caving is firstly a team activity and the effort put into the team will result in the best results for the group as a whole, the equipment we put our lives in, and the cave in which we must care for. Caving is a great adventure that many describe as being on another planet.
KAYAKING
Getting the campers properly outfitted and familiar with the equipment is a must to speed up the learning curve. Campers will progress through the basics of kayak escapes and manoeuvring techniques. The first half of the day will be spent learning how to control the boat and control of your own confidence. As the learning increase so do the challenges (based on personal progression). Instructors will encourage the boater to try new river obstacles, building upon that strong base. Kayaking offers a great and fun day that can eventually lead the camper to a great whitewater experience with strong supervision. We have the capability to tailor all our programs for your student’s ability level and can offer instruction and excitement to all levels.
ROCK CLIMBING
A chance for individuals to work towards and obtain short-term goals. Calleva provides individuals with the necessary tools to scale sheer rock walls successfully and with confidence. Participants will be properly instructed in climbing techniques, crag etiquette, common climbing language and the skills needed to maintain a safe and fun environment. All climbing programs follow the standards of the AMGA (American Mountain Guide Association), and are conducted to the high Calleva standards for safety, education, experience, and fun. Climbers have the ability to function beyond the role of climbing, and become involved in the many interesting & educational facets of climbing with others. Our progressive teaching style can fit the individuals and the group, providing a multi-dimensional experience to the climbing sport. Challenges are offered to the individual, along with gentle encouragement, to maintain a safe and effective adventure for everyone. Participants leave feeling a sense of accomplishment and excitement.
ROPES COURSE
Ropes courses are divided into high and low elements. High elements refer to challenges in which campers are tied into a belay rope (campers will be wearing UIAA certified harness & helmet). High elements are designed for individual growth. Campers will be encouraged (“challenge by choice”) to get outside of their personal comfort zone and set personal goals. Not all high elements are solely for the participant, and they all at least require good group encouragement to aid the student in challenge. Low elements are designed to challenge the group. Groups are given a problem/obstacle and guidelines. These challenges are usually presented as a story of a time and place, in which the team needs to pull their resources to solve the problem. These offer a wide degree of benefits and, if facilitated correctly, will offer depth and growth to all individuals and of course the group.
RAFTING
A group of individual rafters on the river, paddling as a team, and enjoying the rapids and challenges this activity has to offer. Even though we could probably let them jump in the raft and go – Calleva takes this time to teach an understanding of river and raft responsibilities. Campers become aware of their rolls within the environment. Teamwork and team unity become a reality in the fun gentle play of inter-raft competition. The immersion in river environment and riverside features gives the group a chance to understand their role within the river community and responsibilities therein. Great fun!

Activities and Risks
I understand that Calleva has attempted to provide its participants with appropriate equipment and skilled staff for its programs (course, seminar, or trip). Nevertheless, the activities of the programs have risks, including certain risks which are inherent. Inherent risks are those which cannot be eliminated without destroying the unique character of the activities. The same elements that contribute to the unique character of these activities can cause loss or damage to the equipment, accidental injury, illness, or, in extreme cases, permanent trauma, disability or death. Calleva does not want to frighten its participants or reduce their enthusiasm, but considers it important for them and their families to know in advance what to expect, and to be informed of the activities’ inherent risks. The following describes some, but not all, of those risks.
· Calleva programs live, camp and travel out of doors, where they are subject to numerous environmental and other risks. Activities vary from program to program and may be strenuous, physically and emotionally. The activities include hiking and backpacking, mountain boarding, climbing and descending rock cliffs, whitewater and sea kayaking, rafting, canoeing, sailing, horseback riding, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, fishing, and caving.
· Equipment may fail or malfunction, despite reasonable maintenance and use.
· Meals are prepared over gas stoves and open fires. Camping risks and hazards include burns, cuts, slips, falls, lifting, and diarrhea and flu-like illness.
· Decisions are made by the instructors and participants usually are in a wilderness setting, based on a variety of perceptions and evaluations which by their nature are imprecise and subject to errors in judgment. Misjudgments may pertain to, among other things, a participant’s capabilities, environment, terrain, water and weather conditions, natural hazards, routes and medical conditions.
· Calleva activities are instructional in nature and students will be challenged to expand their skills and judgment.
I have read and understand the general information about Calleva and its courses in the Calleva literature and/or at the Calleva website. The staff of Calleva (by phone or email) has been available to more fully explain the nature and physical demands of the activities in which I will be engaged, and the inherent and other risks of my Calleva activity.
I understand and acknowledge that the description above (“Activities and Risks”) of the inherent risks of Calleva’s activities is not complete and that other, including unknown or unanticipated, risks, inherent and otherwise, may result in property loss, injury, illness or death. I acknowledge that my participation in this Calleva program is purely voluntary, and I wish to participate in spite of and with knowledge of the inherent and other risks involved. I acknowledge and assume the inherent risks described above and all other inherent risks of my Calleva activity. In addition, except for an injury or other loss which occurs on lands whose rules or regulations prohibit my doing so as a matter of law, I expressly assume ALL risks of my Calleva activity, inherent or otherwise, and whether or not described above.
