Intensive Reading

Description

This three-week, daily course is designed for students entering Grades 1-8 who are seeking individualized support in reading fluency, phonics, decoding, and comprehension. Our goal is to strengthen fundamental literacy skills and build confidence for the upcoming academic year.
The program utilizes small, age-appropriate group instruction to target the specific needs of each student:

• Grades 1-4 Focus: Instruction centers on foundational reading skills, including individual decoding sessions each morning. Concepts are reinforced using multi-sensory tools, memory strategies, and language-based instruction drawn from structured programs like Phono-graphix and Orton-Gillingham (decoding and encoding), as well as Great Leaps (reading fluency). We also integrate vocabulary development through word study and comprehension strategies.
• Grades 5-8 Focus: Instruction shifts to higher-level reading fundamentals, strengthening skills in comprehension, fluency, visualization, critical thinking, and advanced vocabulary. This is an excellent opportunity for middle schoolers to gain the stamina and confidence necessary for literature and academic reading as they prepare for high school.

This program is led by trained instructors and reading specialists, including McLean School Faculty. Every student is thoroughly screened at the start of the camp to accurately identify challenges and document improvement. Families will receive a detailed report at the end of the session detailing their child’s progress, documented strengths, and recommended areas for continued support in the coming school year.
