You’ve Got Questions?We’ve Got Answers!

Is SummerEdge open to campers who do not attend McLean School during the school year?

Yes, the vast majority of our programs are open to all campers regardless of whether they are McLean School students. In the rare case that one of our programs is limited to McLean School students, it will be noted on our website or online application.

What is your COVID-19 safety plan?

Click here for our full COVID-19 Policies and Procedures. We will continue to evaluate the current COVID-19 situation and make adjustments accordingly. Below are some of the many layered measures in place to help keep our campers and staff safe.

  • All SummerEdge participants are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (full primary series). Proof of vaccination is required for all campers who are not also current McLean School students.
  • HEPA filters in each classroom
  • Hand sanitizing stations located throughout the building
  • Masks are currently optional. Should this policy change, families will be notified in writing by the Camp Director.
  • If they are sick, showing symptoms related to COVID-19, or were knowingly exposed to the virus, those campers should be tested and kept home.

Please feel free to contact Jenny Whichard, Director of SummerEdge, at jwhichard@mcleanschool.org or 240-395-0676 for more information or if you have additional questions regarding COVID-19 safety measures.

My child is registered for a morning and afternoon (or full day) program during the same week. What will they do between 12:00-1:00 pm?

From 12:00-1:00 pm, only campers participating in both morning and afternoon (or full day) programs stay on our campus for supervised lunch and activities. Our staff will help guide them through their transitions. These campers should pack a lunch, snack, and refillable water bottle each day.

What is your camper to staff ratio?

Our camper to staff ratio of 8:1 ensures individual attention for all campers.

What is the daily attendance procedure?

Campers are expected to attend their programs each day. Their instructor will take attendance promptly at the beginning of each program’s day. If your camper will be absent or tardy we ask that you please inform your child’s instructor and the SummerEdge office by emailing us at summeredge@mcleanschool.org at least 24 hours in advance if possible.

Is there homework?

There is no homework for SummerEdge campers with the exception of those in our One Room Schoolhouse program.

Will my camper have any breaks/physical activity during their program?

Breaks are built into each SummerEdge program and based on age appropriate attention spans.

Where do I drop off and pick up my child?

Parents may drop off or pick up campers at McLean School. At dismissal, a sign with your child’s first and last name should be visible on your dashboard. Staff will greet and escort children to and from their cars, however there is parking available on campus should you decide to come into the building. Otherwise, we ask that you wait in the carpool line around the circle until your child is dismissed to ensure a smooth and timely carpool experience for all!

Can I celebrate my child’s birthday at camp?

If your child has a birthday during camp and you would like to send in a treat to celebrate, we will need it to come in its original packaging with the ingredients listed on it (for this reason, store-bought treats are preferred). We recommend popsicles, as the ingredients allow for more campers with food allergies to enjoy them as well.

Do you provide daily transportation?

No, SummerEdge does not offer daily transportation/busing. Families are asked to drive their child to and from campus each day. On our online application families may indicate whether they would like to be added to a Carpool List. This list will be organized by Zip Code and shared with other registered SummerEdge families closer to the start of camp. Families may then elect to reach out to others on the list to potentially set up a carpool on their own.

Are there food restrictions?

Campers must bring a daily lunch, drink and snack that does not require refrigeration or heating. A supervised lunch takes place from 12:00 to 12:20 pm. There is a nut-free table available, however, please note that we are not a nut-free campus.
